    Reverse Osmosis (RO) System: Efficient Water Treatment Technology

    In today's water treatment field, reverse osmosis (RO) system has become a vital technology, widely used in various industries, providing people with high-quality purified water.

    1. Working principle of RO system

    The core of the reverse osmosis system is to use the selective interception effect of the semipermeable membrane to separate water and solutes under pressure. Its working process is like a fine screening mechanism, which only allows water molecules to pass through, while blocking other chemical ions, bacteria, viruses and other impurities. When the raw water is added to a certain pressure (usually 6-20 kg pressure) under the action of a high-pressure pump, it will be forced to pass through a reverse osmosis membrane with a pore size of only 0.0001 microns. This extremely small pore size allows only water molecules and solvents with a volume less than 0.0001 microns to pass smoothly, while other impurities are discharged with the wastewater, thereby achieving the purpose of purifying water.

    2. Components of RO system

    Pretreatment system: This is an important pre-processing link of RO system, which aims to improve the water supply conditions to meet the water inlet requirements of reverse osmosis system, so as to protect the reverse osmosis host and extend the service life of membrane. Generally speaking, the pretreatment system consists of multi-media filter, activated carbon filter, antiscalant dosing device and precision filter. Multi-media filter can filter out suspended particles with a diameter greater than 10um; activated carbon can remove odor, residual chlorine, heavy metal ions, organic carcinogens, etc. in water; antiscalant dosing device (or softening device) can greatly reduce the formation of scaling substances such as calcium and magnesium in the system; the filtration accuracy of precision filter is 5um, which further removes residual particulate matter in water.

    Seawater desalination pretreatment technologyHigh-pressure pump: It is the key equipment to provide power for RO system, responsible for pressurizing raw water so that it can overcome the resistance of reverse osmosis membrane and pass through membrane for separation smoothly. The performance and stability of high-pressure pump directly affect the operating efficiency and water quality of RO system.

    Reverse osmosis device: This is the core component of the RO system, which consists of a reverse osmosis membrane and a membrane shell, a rack, an electric control box, etc. The reverse osmosis membrane is a semi-permeable membrane with special properties. The common membrane type is a polyamide membrane, and the membrane type is a rolled composite membrane, and its salt removal rate can reach 99.5%. The membrane shell is used to accommodate the reverse osmosis membrane, provide support and protection for it; the rack is the supporting structure of the entire device to ensure its stable operation; the electric control box is used to control and monitor the operating parameters of the RO system, such as pressure, flow, water quality, etc.

    Flushing/cleaning device: Since some impurities and dirt will gradually accumulate on the surface of the RO membrane during long-term operation, affecting its performance and life, it needs to be flushed and cleaned regularly. The flushing/cleaning device can flush and clean the RO membrane during the operation of the system or when it is shut down, remove the dirt on the membrane surface, and restore the performance of the membrane.

    Intermediate water tank: It is used to store the clean water treated by the RO system, and plays a role of buffering and storage for subsequent use or further processing.

    3. Advantages of RO system

    Efficient water purification effect: RO system can remove up to 99% of total dissolved solids, microorganisms and many high molecular weight organic matter, and produce high water quality, which can meet various application scenarios with strict water quality requirements, such as electronics industry, biopharmaceutical industry, etc.

    Energy saving: Compared with traditional water treatment processes such as distillation, reverse osmosis only uses a small part of the total energy, which greatly reduces energy consumption.

    Small footprint: The equipment structure of RO system is compact and small, which is suitable for use in places with limited space.

    High degree of automation: Modern RO system is usually equipped with advanced automatic control system, which can realize automatic operation, monitoring and alarm, easy operation, and reduce manual intervention and operation error.

    4. Application fields of RO system

    Industrial field: In the electronics industry, RO system is used to produce ultrapure water to meet the extremely high requirements of water quality in processes such as semiconductor chip manufacturing and integrated circuit production; in the chemical industry, it is used to remove impurities in water and improve product quality; in the power industry, it is used as a boiler feed water treatment equipment to prevent boiler scaling and corrosion.

    Drinking water treatment: RO system is widely used in community drinking water treatment, direct drinking water projects, etc., to provide people with safe and healthy drinking water.

    Desalination: With the increasing shortage of water resources, desalination of seawater has become one of the important ways to solve water resource problems. RO system has important applications in desalination of seawater and can convert seawater into drinkable fresh water.
